- Keep your dogs/pets inside! (This means cats, too.) This is the week where the highest number of pets reacts to all the noise. Shelters get between 30 and 60% more pets this week than any other week of the years.
- Keep a gate up near the door so that if you have to open the door, your dog/pet can't slip out.
- Loud noises are part of the Fourth. So, keep pets in a quiet area, with white noise going. A TV, music, or calming sounds can help. A thunder shirt may help some. A few of my dogs have to take trazodone before storms and on days like July 4. It has helped them. Plan ahead. If you've had regular appointments with your vet, you may be able to call and get some meds. Caution: try the med at a low dose first. I tried trazodone with Cinnamon, and she had adverse effects, so she can't take it. - Make sure your pet has on ID. Mine wear it all the time. Gates can be left open, a fence can have a loose post-- so an ID helps. Are your pets microchipped. Make sure your information is up to date on their microchip.
- Don't let your pet have picnic food. They need to stay on their regular diet. And keep alcohol away from them.
- Kids love glow sticks-- but they contain ingredients that are toxic for dogs. Very toxic.
- If you do take your pet with you, keep a leash on at all times. You can even hook it to your belt or around your waist. They can panic and escape quickly. Ideally, they should be INSIDE.
- Remember to keep pets away from grills and fire pits. (Again, being inside will prevent that danger.)
BE SAFE. ๐๐งจ❤️❤️
