ODIN STANDING GUARD

Odin is one of my foster dogs. He came from a shelter in Roanoke, VA. (Thanks Roger and Lucinda!!) He is such a sweet dog!

He loves to curl up beside you.

The closer the better. If he can figure out how to get on his back (like a baby) in your arms, that is even better!!

He's not much of a yard dog. I don't know if he didn't have a yard before, or if he was just walked. He's not quite sure what to do in the back yard. We go out there many times a day and I thought he would just go out with the gang, but he's a little tentative. He sometimes just hangs out on the steps-- literally. He was half on one step and half on the other. So funny. (This was a cell phone picture, so it's not great.)

But, yesterday, he went flying out to the fence. He had gone out the day before with the gang when he heard my sister's dog at the fence. Yep, my sister lives right next door-- aren't I lucky!!

Odin went out to look for Chloe, his fence buddy. And he sat there! So, of course, I got my camera and went out, too.

He waited and waited, but she didn't come out. Don't worry, Odin. I'm sure she'll be there tomorrow.

FAREWELL PETEY

Petey came into rescue a year ago from a shelter.

He was dumped there by his owner. He may have been a breeder dog, we aren't sure. He was blind and almost deaf, but he knew he was loved the whole year his owners had him. Sometimes, the seniors we get don't have a lot of time, but if we can be part of giving them that love, we want to do it.

If you are interested in helping a senior dog have a loving life, just let us know. You will be as blessed as Petey's parents were. Rest in peace, sweet boy.

WILSON--DO I HAVE TO HAVE A BATH?

Wilson is the small male Peke we got out of a shelter two weeks ago. His skin was infected all over, even his face, which is why he looks pretty rough.

He has been on antibiotics and special baths and he feels SO much better! When he's dry, he's becoming a very pretty boy. And he's so joyful!!!

He had kennel cough, too, but he's doing much better now. He is becoming very playful and will chase toys when you throw them, and pounce on them before running back to his foster mom.
He loves his purple spider. He is such a sweetheart. He's very loving and just wants to be with you.

He just had a bath here, so he's a bit wet, but his coat is doing great. Whoever adopts him is going to be very lucky.

EMMIE

Emmie has come a long way from the very timid, thin Peke we took into rescue. Now she loves hanging out on the deck and playing with toys.

She's finished her surgeries, and she doesn't have to wear her e-collar any more. She's very glad about that.

She loves to hang out on my lap, and she can be very relaxed about it.

If I don't hold onto her, she'll just slide right off my lap!

Her hair is growing out, and she has a little spot on her head where it sticks up a bit-- it gives her charm.

Look how pretty she is!

Her foster brother, Jasper, is a beauty, too!! He was a rescue also. His mom saved him from the home he was in and now he is a happy, loving little boy.

Emmie has discovered toys and loves bringing out different ones. I'm glad I have a stash of them-- she plays with some no other Peke has played with.

She even played with a towel before she was about to have a bath.
Emmie is about eleven pounds, a small Peke, but she has a huge amount of joy inside her tiny body. If you are interested in adopting her, just email us! potomacpekes@gmail.com

GRACIE LU

Gracie had a visitor the other day. Little Bodie. He lives down the street and is a great friend of Gracie's.

He arrived with his mom, and found out if he got on the back of her chair, he could climb right up on the kitchen counter!

Gracie was amazed by his antics. She would never do something like this. She is too much of a lady!

Bodie kept wandering the counter.

Can someone get the boy off the counter?

Gracie would NEVER get on the kitchen counter. But, her mom says she does have many attributes of a cat. When she calls her, she lets her mom know she understands and will look at her for a bit and then (in her own good time) she strolls over as if to say--- "You called??" When they are outside and she sees something that attracts her attention, she stops and remains in a stop until she is ready to move. Her mom may be ready to move, but if Gracie isn't, no one is going anywhere.

Gracie also has a way of letting her mom know if she isn't happy with her. Jane went to lunch one day with a friend, and Gracie thought she was gone entirely too long. When her mom got home, Gracie let her "pay" for being gone. In fact, Gracie acted to unlike herself that Jane asked asked her if she would like to go for a ride. Most Pekes LOVE car rides. Well, Gracie was full of herself while they rode in the car, but when they came home she was POOR MISS PUT UPON again. Oh, this is so Peke-like!! My Cranberry can pull the same thing! Gracie also has SELECTIVE HEARING. Here's a story her mom sent me. "Generally, she can hear a pin drop, a paper crinkle, or a movement by me-- That is until I call her and say, Gracie, where are you? Not a sound and no movement. As I begin to look and call, I go to all the regular resting places and there are many. There are those out in the open, in the hall, in the foyer, in the doorways, and at the front door. These are her spots to check on me. Better than a camera cause she is able to track my movements easily. But of course when she hides these are not the places she chooses. So I continue to call and I look in the bed room, on the couch in the computer room, in my bathroom and finally in the guest bathroom and there in the corner is Ms Gracie, bright eyed and tail wagging as if to say that was fun!!! And I knew you were calling but I was hiding and when I hide I don't answer. Love those Pekes."

Jane would not take a million dollars for Gracie because she brightens every day of her life. Jane says Gracie a mess!! But, she loves her anyway! I think we can all relate.

MAX, FAREWELL SWEET BOY

My friend, Autumn, had a special boy that died a few months ago. I received pictures of him recently and wanted to share them. I love this one with the sunglasses on floating in the pool. That was one pampered dog!!

Max was a rescued Shih Tzu. When she got him, he was filthy and matted. He had been dumped by the side of the road but she saw beyond the dirt and mats and knew he would be a beautiful boy inside and out. I love adopters like this who can see that. This dog was not in a rescue group-- he would have been cleaned up. Most shelters don't have the staff (or the money) to do what we do for the dogs. After four trips to the groomer, he became the beautiful boy he was supposed to be all along. Max lost his sight and hearing but as long as he had someone with him, he was fine. He lived until he was 16 years old. Rest in peace, sweet boy.

Autumn's first dog, Tracy, went to the Rainbow Bridge a long time ago, but I wanted to post her picture, too, I'm sure they are both playing joyfully there. Rest in peace, Tracy.

LOUIE THE BLIND PEKE

I know you remember Louie! He was the injured puppy we got out of an animal control-- we were his only chance and we took him. His eyes had been seriously injured in a car accident, but after surgery to remove his eyes (he was blind and there was no saving the eyes), he has recovered really well.

He is the happiest dog! He now lives in Minnesota with his family. AND he has become a traveler, even going to see the space needle in Washington state.

He has two doggy friends-- here he is with J. Edgar Hoover, his Peke brother. Even though Louie can't see, it hasn't gotten in the way of joy and fun.

And here he is with Saffron, and these dogs are all wonderful friends.

Here he is with, Linda, one of his moms and his dog buddies.

And here's his other mom-- they both love him so much!

This is how he looks shortly after surgery, but now his hair has grown back.

He loves going for walks and you can see him in action on this video. We love you, Louie!!

GETTING FINANCIAL HELP

If your dog has a medical need and you are unable to pay for it, there might be an organization to help you. Here are some links for it: Click here: Financial Help In these hard financial time, we would rather see people be able to keep their dogs, where both would be happier!

DOMINO

Domino came into rescue in August. He was very scared and hates being alone.

He loves children. (Now understand that toddlers don't always qualify haha-- I have a one year old grandson and Pekes don't necessarily like to have their hair pulled.)

Domino loves to have you nearby and is ready to be on your lap.

If he's not near you, he might give this sorrowful face. Domino loves to race in the yard with his Peke friends. The more the merrier!

Or he just might smile when you let him in. He does have some anxiety which we are working on. But, if you want a devoted friend, this might just be the one!

FAREWELL PEKING

Peking came into rescue in October of 2006. He was left in a shelter by his owner who said he was too old to take care of.

Peking was so sweet at the shelter. He would follow people around and be content just to have someone nearby. He just wanted to be someone's best boy. We thought Peking was about 8 years old. That's not old for a Peke.

Peking was adopted and lived five years with his owner. This is his owner's favorite picture of him. He had just been to the groomer and he had red bows in. Peking thought this was very undignified, but it was still cute and Peking, sweet boy that he was, went along with it.

His owner, Susan, misses her boy so much and we are so sorry. Rest in peace, Peking. You were greatly loved, sweet boy.
