CAMBERLEY KATE

 This is a post I am sharing of a rescuer before it was popular to do so. She was ahead of her time. 

I've done rescue for 20 years.  Sissy is one of them.   But, it wasn't new.  I am just one in a line of many who have helped dogs in need.   

Kate Ward, later known as "Camberley Kate" was born in 1895.   She was born in Yorkshire, England.  After going into service, she bought a cottage in 1943.

She rescued a dog who was going to be put down.   People began to hear about her and dogs were left where she would find them.  

Some were taken to the police, who offered them to Kate.   Some showed up in carrier bags, hopeful she would take them in.  And she did.  

It is estimated that she saved over 600 dogs.  That was quite a feat because it wasn't normal and she continued to take care of them.  A local vet, Geoffrey Craddock said they were all well taken care of.  Her home was listed as:  “Ward K 218 London Road., Cam., Dogs Home”.   She allowed people to take her picture for a fee.  Others donated to help take care of the dogs.   She was ahead of her time.   In 1969, she was part of introducing a law to make it illegal for dogs to be out without a leash/lead.  She wanted dogs to be safe.  

She still had 19 dogs when she was 82 years old.   What an incredible woman.  Doing something at a time when rescues were available.  A time when dogs had little chance.   Kate began something that many continue to do.  We try to save those who can't save themselves.   

Kate left money in a trust to make sure her remaining dogs were cared for after her death in 1979.   She did what many are still trying to do.   I was encouraged by her story and wanted to share it with you.  Do you have a rescue story?

FAREWELL ACE

ACE

In October of 2020, Ace came into rescue.   His owner had surrendered him to another rescue and we took him into ours.

Ace had some medical problems and we took care of them.   

He wasn't on a good diet and nutrition is so important (no grain free foods!).   

Ace grabbed the hearts of his mom and dad, Betsy and Justin.

He was definitely a daddy's boy.   

Ace was laid back and so sweet.

He loved to spend time just looking out the door and watching the neighborhood.

Here he was with his friend, Buddy.   Buddy died in December and his dad had said, "For anyone who has ever lost a dog, my heart breaks for you. You will never understand the pain until it happens to you." I know so many of you understand this.

Ace was 11 years old and had a slight heart murmur.

Over the week-end, he began to have trouble breathing, so he was taken to the emergency room.

He was given tests and put in an oxygen kennel.   His lungs had almost filled with fluid-- we don't know why it happened so quickly, but it did.   He had cardiogenic pulmonary edema.  He was in heart failure.   Everything was tried to save him, but he couldn't breathe out of the oxygen kennel.  

His mom and dad held him as they let him go-- the hardest but kindest thing they could do.   Run free now, sweet boy.   You were so loved.   

KING GEORGE

King George came into rescue a few weeks ago.  He was very sick, but he's ready to go to his foster home and begin his medical-- neuter, dental, etc.  

He loves the other dogs.  Here he is with Hennie.   She's been doing great!

King George loves Claretta (our club secretary).   What a baby.   Look at his face.  💓

He follows her all over.    George needs eye drops every day, to help the dry eye.  It's common for Pekingese.

He goes to the door to go outside, but he will mark, so he wears a belly band to stay safe.   

Belly bands are easy to use, and these are washable ones.   There are disposable ones, too.   My Piper can be "bad" so he uses belly bands, too.

Once his medical is finished, he will be available for adoption.   He's with Nikki here, and he's does so well in a home environment.   If you are interested in adopting him, please fill out this application.

MUFFIE HAS SURGERY

Muffie came into rescue last autumn.   She was a tiny 8 pounder and she was in rough shape. 

She needed a specialist to do her dental.  She had mammory tumors.   She desperately needed help.  

She had a double dental (couldn't be done in one session due to jaw issues), and she had two mammory surgeries.   But, we had special helpers with her bills and I'm so thankful-- you know who you are.   💘

Muffie was doing so much better.  But, we noticed she seemed to have trouble breathing well, so she was checked out again.   The vet felt she would benefit from stenotic nares surgery.  This is done when the nose openings are very small, and they open up the outer part of the nose to allow better air flow.  

A before picture from our vet shows how closed the nose was.   (If you see your Peke is having trouble breathing, have your vet evaluate to see if this surgery would help.)

Here she is after the surgery-- the nose openings are much better.  She was just finished with surgery, so the tube is still in.   

She is home now (this is an older picture) and is resting now.   She will feel so much better now.   Her foster mom adores this girl and is adopting her.    Get well quickly, Muffie!  You are just precious.  💜
 

TUK TUK GOES TO MARKET

Tuk Tuk has been so socialized since he was a puppy.  

He has best buds at home w Granger..

And Gigi.  

But Tuk Tuk loves meeting other dogs.  He goes to the weekly farmers market and meets so many.  The two puppies are Zeus and Hades.  

There were so many to meet!  Gracie was a puppy. 

Riley is a Cocker spaniel puppy.  

Hades looked on while the French Bulldog was SO HAPPY to meet everyone. 

Zeus was very sweet.  

Callie was a Bernese puppy. Pure adorable.  

We went to visit and Sissy went with us. 

I’m sure Tuk Tuk told her all about his wonderful day.  ❤️
 

RALO SAYS HAPPY DAY!

Ralo was turned in last autumn and loves his foster now adoptive home. He is so sweet.  Just easy going and loving. 

Bogie still thinks he’s an interloper.  🤣. Come on Bogie. .  He’s your brother!   He loves you.  👍. HAPPY SUNDAY!

 

RAIN RAIN GO AWAY

We have had a lot of rain in Virginia lately.   Ida's pups are looking out the door saying "Rain Rain Go Away, Come Again Some Other Day!"  

Nice days are for sitting outside, holding Paddington. 

It's for enjoying what's outside, just taking a moment to rest.

Rain does help the flowers grow.  We don't have many flowers-- too many dogs to run over them.
