HAPPY BIRTHDAY SADIE

Trixie and Gidget love their new home. They joined other PVPC alumni. 

Leia now Li-Li is one of them.  She adores all her new family.  She has so many friends. 

Belle now Minnie and Oliver now Moose are from the Christmas rescue  and look at the faces behind them.  There’s so much love there.  

Trixie and Gidget are there too and they helped celebrate their big sister’s birthday! 

They each got a birthday treat.  Yum! 

Sadie is about 15-16 and was rescued in 2022.   She has a loving mom and dad, a home, friends.  It’s the best.  Happy birthday sweet girl! 🥰

WELCOME SOPHIE AND SPENCER

We were asked if we could help two 3 month old bichon puppies. We had an open foster so we said yes. 

Who is who?

Their foster mom put Sophie in a green harness and Spencer is wearing a red one.  

They are both super sweet and very playful. 

They are in Yogi’s home and they play until they run out of energy.  A short rest and they’re off again to play.  

Sophie and Spencer can be adopted separately  

We adopt in Maryland and Virginia.  We do home and vet checks.  We do not adopt to first time adopters or to homes w young children

MARLOWE’S DNA

Marlowe is doing great.  Winter is insisting that he plays w her. 

She barks and say “let’s play!!”

Todd is observing but also gets into it. 

Is that a play bow? 

His foster mom did a DNA test on him. 

He is mostly Pekingese. 🐾

But what is a Mi-Ki?   Marlowe doesn’t care. He’s busy w his bone. 

He’s contemplating all the wonderful breeds he has.  It doesn’t matter.  He’s beautiful to us. 

 

GWENNIE’S RECHECK

The ophthalmologist wanted to check Gwennie’s eyes one more time before her surgery on Friday. 

It was an extra long appointment because he wanted to be extra sure of the right plan for her. 

She was so good for her long exam.  Really!  She was amazing w all the bright lights and tests.  She just stood there like a champ!  I was very proud of her.  

This couple was their w their dog. They were enamored by Gwennie and asked to hold her while I checked out. 

She slept all the way home. It was only 30 minutes, but she was exhausted.  After her nap, she was ready to get out and chat w Ginger and Toby who live next door.  

I’ll update you after her surgery on Friday. 🙏

ADVANTAGES OF HAVING A DOG

There are so many advantages of having a dog.  You are always being watched.  

When you go to the bathroom alone, don’t worry, a Peke will join you shortly. (Thank you Beth.) 

You will find hair everywhere — whether you want it or not. 

If you see one, you might see two .. or more. 

They like to be close.  On your feet while you do the dishes.  Hello Gwennie. 

Double the dogs, double the fun. 

One helps guard your yard, 6 makes an army of watch dogs. 

They comes in many sizes and many colors. 

No tv, no problem.  Just watch a dog. 

You will always have hair on your blankets, in your car, in your house—- it’s everywhere.  

You have walking companions.  These two have decorative harnesses. 😂😂 

They can be part of an exercise plan. Use a tiny one if you’re a beginner.  As you get stronger, pick a larger “weight.”  

If you have extras, you will find hair in your eyelashes,  that’s my favorite.  It evades your ability to find it. That just makes it more fun.  It happens daily.  

I know there are more pluses to having a dog, but I’ve just started the list.  You can add to it. 👍
 

BRUCE SENDS A MESSAGE

Bruce sent me a message.  Our PVPC alumni are so smart. It’s amazing what they can do.  He came to us in January.  He needed medical care and he became a Peke for awhile. ❤️

Bruce wanted me to know that he love loves his new home.  He also loves tummy rubs so he is ready for one.  I couldn’t resist that sweet face.  I bet you couldn’t either.

SCAMERS--BE CAREFUL

I see so many things online and I know they are trying to sell dogs they don't have.   They use other people's pictures, or post puppies that aren't theirs.  

All the ones here are rescues.  When I have someone ask me to recommend a breeder, it upsets me.   There are some great Pekingese breeders, but they don't just sell puppies.  They screen their applicants to make sure they know what kind of home they are going to.    Some who are "selling" or "adopting" want you to make a deposit.  And a LOT of the time, you never see your money or a dog.   They are probably out of the country.  A friend called the number on one of the ads and it was someone else, not the person selling the dogs.   If you have to pay an upfront deposit.... well, I wouldn't do it.   If you buy a dog that way, and it's delivered to you, it's not from a reputable breeder.   I know some people who have done this, and have received a nice dog, but since I am rescue, I never advocate buying a dog from an unknown breeder (some are just mass producing dogs) or a pet store (which gets dogs from mass breeding places). 

Koda, now in a wonderful home, was bought from a pet store.   He was turned in at 8 months because he had problems with his eyes (PVPC did surgery for him).  Some back yard breeder dogs are bred even though they have traits that should not be passed on.   Some have health issues and many times the dogs they come from are not being cared for the way they deserve.   I know I'm on my soap box, but it's an issue for me.  After 23 years in rescue, I've seen so much, and have become hard about these issues.  Too many dogs pay the price.  If you want a dog, apply to a good rescue. (And expect them to do a thorough check up on you).  If you can't find the breed you want, consider another dog.  There are beautiful mixes in shelters all over who are waiting for homes.   I love the Pekingese breed and have had them most of my life.   But we've taken in other small mixes and I've fallen in love with them too.   

So be cautious if you are thinking of buying online or through newspaper ads, or (oh gosh) by a sign on the street.   I'll keep advocating this because I've seen so much.   

(We just took in 2 Bichon puppies and are they adorable!   I know we're Peke rescue, but these dogs are just as lovable.💜)
 

ANOTHER RESCUE DAY

  I’m always surprised that there are so many dogs in need. Even after all the years I’ve done rescue.   We’ve worked w a specific shelter for most of the time I’ve been in rescue.   They had another request yesterday. 

Two 8-10 week old puppies were brought in.  Tiny Bichon puppies.  Could we help?  They’re not Pekingese.  But we’ve made exceptions before.  One male, one female.  I’ll post more when we know more about them.  We will need names so give us some ideas on what to name them.  🐾😍

PHOEBE

Phoebe

Phoebe came into rescue last week.  She’s doing well.  She’s learned to go out in the yard. 

She’s found toys to play w and is having so much fun. She is affectionate w people and follows her foster mom around. She enjoys lap time. 🥰

She can be bossy is another dog gets into her space.   She is good w other dogs as long as they respect that.  She would do well as an only dog, too.

CINNAMON’S TAIL

Cinnamon came to rescue in December of 2023.  

She was underweight, had a thin amount of hair. But when I took her to the vet, they cleaned her up and she was beautiful. 

As she became healthier, her hair grew. 

And her tail hair grew. 

I called her Cinnamon of the ears or Cinnamon of the tail. Her tail was glorious. 

She was timid but she wanted love.  She still has a lot of fear in her around new people.  (We decided to keep her because I wasn’t sure she could make another change.  I rarely keep one of my fosters, but we wanted her to feel safe and w us and she does.)

I decided to measure her ears and tail.  She is not a big girl, 12-13 pounds.  

I got the tape measure and measured. Her ears aren’t as long as they were but they’re still 7-8 inches long.  And her tail is 17-18 inches long.  Wow.  That’s long for a little girl. 

She’s a beautiful girl and she’s ours. 

 And the question now is:  how long is your dog’s tail?  😁
