Fourth Of July Safety and Stewie

It's Fourth of July-- a day we celebrate our freedom in America. I have friends from other countries who read ths blog, so I know they're not as familiar with our holidays.

Of course, I still have to have Peke pictures on the blog! Even if it IS a holiday!! This is Stewart, or Stewie. The first picture is of him when Tammy got him. He was sick and traumatized by all he'd been through.

But, look what love and care do!!! This is Stewie now! Can you believe the difference! We see this a lot in rescue-- a dog that looks like all you can do is let them go-- but we fight for them! We get them medical care and good food, and time to heal. And it makes a difference. One little dog at a time, it makes a difference! And Stewie is proof. Thank you Tammy, from all of us. And give Stewie a hug from me.

FOURTH OF JULY ++++++++++

For many of us who have dogs, the Fourth of July can be a very stressful day for our pets. The loud noises of firecrackers and fireworks can cause many of the dogs to go into panic. I know I have to sedate two of mine if there is even a thunder storm! Your vet can tell you what is best for your pet. Some may advise you to use benydryl, but for mine, that isn't enough. Xanax and acepromazine are also choices that you can get from your vet.

Please make sure your pets are not outside-- there are times when an animal can be so terrified that they can break out of the most secure yard. Or they can injure themselves trying. Keep them away from balconies, and open windows. The best thing you can do is to keep them securely in your home, or in the bedroom, where you have a TV or radio on- LOUD enough to block out some of the noises. They may still try to hide, but they will be safer in a more confined area.

Keep identification on your dogs/pets all the time, but especially on this holiday.

Chico and Steven-- Best Friends!

I received an email about a Peke named Chico who needed a home. A woman had saved him from a neglectful situation, but was unable to keep him permanently. She took care of him-- and got him all the vet care he needed.

He was out of our area and I was trying to find a foster home in another group for him. Around the same time, I received an email from someone who wanted a Peke. She also had a Pit Bull-- I know, I know. That scares a lot of us. But, this Pit was a sweetheart named Steven and he was really good around small dogs.

So, what did I do??? I put the two peoople together to see if this could be a match. Sometimes, in rescue, we can't take in a dog for lack of foster homes (boy, do we need foster homes!). But, we can try other ways to help the dogs who need help.

Steven and Chico play together. They look out the window together.

They squint their eyes and smile together.

They watch TV together.

Look at this happy face! He's saying, "THANK YOU FOR FINDING ME A FRIEND."

To say the least, this is a match made in heaven. Chico and Steven adore each other and are best friends now. I love being part of rescue-- finding these little love stories is what it's all about!

Hollywood Dogs Checking In

Here are more of the Westward Ho dogs! They love California!!

These are our rescue dogs (adopted) who now live in Hollywood-- their owner sent me the pictures. Maxwell (left) and Tyler love their new home.
She said, "TyTy says Hi!"

Hi, back, Tyler!! LOVE you face! You two boys have a great life out there!

Kenzo- Peke Wanna-Be

Kenzo is a shih tzu x maltese. He really wants to be a Peke though. His owner, Melinda, lives in Australia and we email often. It's so much fun having a friend in Australia!! Kenzo may not be a Peke, but like Pekes, he too has velcro paws, tail, body etc. The kitchen floor is full of leaves and twigs. And pollen.

The Vet told Kenzo's owner that these past years have been really bad for the itchy dogs and cats since they haven't had much rain and the pollens do not get washed away. She is sure her vet much have a Rolls Royce from all the vet bills she has paid!
Kenzo is such a naughty puppy. His mom does wish Lulu (herPeke) was here to help her, she would have him behaving. Her Peke ran the house in her quiet but determined way.

Kenzo likes to chew! His owner has never in her life had such a naughty puppy! He has taken a liking to giving their kitchen chair legs a "good old chew"! She said he thinks he is a beaver and had teeth like them - he has these tiny teeth but , oh can they chew through wood! She has sprayed the chair and table legs and he has not come near them to give it a chew . He chews the carpet too! He has alot of toys, so why do the dogs do this?! :-)

In Australia, they are now in winter-- and we are well into summer. Maybe Chewy Kenzo will grow up and not do so much chewing from now on!

LuLu Again-- and Friends

Fran and her pups (and family!) just moved to California. The dogs are making the adjustment to her beautiful new home and nice yard. LuLu the Peke is definitely the alpha dog there-- bossy mama to them all.

Bambi Belle is timid, but doing great. Fran rescued her and Taco from a breeder who was just going to throw them away to a shelter.

Sweet Nubby just likes to be anywhere that she is loved.

And LuLu Belle is queen over her domain and her subjects (dogs and people). She is checking out her new surroundings and wonders what the big water feature (pool) is all about! I do NOT think she's going to take up swimming. :-)

Her mom sent me this note: "Lu was curious about the pool and would run to the edge when I was swimming. I carried her in with me and she seemed to really like the warm water on her, she had such a good time, every time I'd carry her out to the edge she'd run back and whine for me to carry her back in. I guess it cooled her off as well. (Don't worry, the pool is treated with green cleaners because of my allergy to overly chlorinated pools.) Nubby, Taco and Bell do not like it."

Lu has also made a new friend, her owner's father in law's Lab Bubba. He's an older dog and Lu enjoys following him around. Her mom said it's cute because he comes up to our bedroom door and she meets him there in the morning and waits for me to open up the door for her. They have a big size difference and they have the same color coat. We'll have pictures of them together soon.

LuLu is taking a little time getting used to California, but I know she'll love the nice weather, laying by the pool and spending time with her mom.

We have quite a few of our adopted dogs who have moved to California-- Maxwell, Tyler, Max (not the one I have now), Cooper, Dexter (with their Jelly Belly friend) and now LuLu Belle. I think there's a "Westward Ho" movement going on!!

Clarence at Work

Remember Clarence-- we got him before Christmas, so I named him after the Christmas angel in "It's a Wonderful Life."

This is Clarence at work-- REALLY!! His mom takes him to work a lot and while there, Clarence works hard right along with her. Can you tell?? I think he's working hard at sleepiing!!
