Betty

Betty came into rescue in October-- we've taken in a lot this month! She joined the other dogs at her foster home-- here are three of them. Hanna is in the background-- a very shy girl, who loves her dog friends. Jill Lee is on the left-- a total sweetheart!! And her mom's very favorite Peke, DiDi. She was a foster "failure"-- those are the ones we love so much, we just can't let them go! Most of us end up with one or two of those.

Betty was with someone who bred her and he was her second owner. Her first owner did the same. He was going to give her to another breeder, but we were able to take her instead.

We were told that she was abused in her first home. I don't know how people can do that-- She just has to learn that we love her and she can trust us. We're not sure if she had to fight for her food, but her foster mom is working to make sure she isn't food aggressive and to learn she will not be hungry.

She loves to ride in the car and walk on a leash. Her foster mom is working on making sure she is housetrained-- when you're a breeder dog, you don't get a lot of training. She is checking out her new foster home. She may have a little mix in her-- sometimes that happens in rescue. We go on a picture and when we actually get them, we do "hmmm, what else is there?"

BB/Bianca

Bianca, now BB, came into rescue a month ago. She was from a puppy mill raid in Staunton, VA. She has an eye injury, and timid, and needed help. People were not interested in adopting this little girl who needed surgery. We were interested!

She was at her first foster home for three weeks and believe me, her foster mom did a lot for her-- but this little girl needed a fenced yard to run and play in. She did not know what a leash was.

She came to my house, and decided to learn to read. She pulled a magazine out of my basket-- I think it was Coastal Living. Good choice, BB. But, you can't read MY magazines-- get your own!

She seems happy here-- smiling a lot. She's very timid, doesn't want people to touch her, but she will now come up to me and lick my finger tips.

BB is on the deck with Coco-- BB is a beautiful little girl. Her hair will grow back out and she'll gain confidence.

She loves Max and Scooter-- she's checking out Max and his toy. And check out the Pekingese bag hanging on the door.

Occasionally, she just sits, and rests, but she does love to rough house with Scooter-- he's her favorite dog here. He's LOTS of the foster Pekingese favorite dogs. Check out this video to see them playing-- it's dark, but you can see some of it.

Coco, Petersburg Peke

This is Coco. She came from the animal control in Petersburg, VA. There's a GREAT animal control officer there. When Coco was turned in by her family (they couldn't afford her care), we were contacted. Coco is almost 8, and full of joy.

I picked her up on October 19 and we drove back to Virginia Beach. She was content to just rest in the front seat by me.

Or sleep. :-)

We went straight to the vet, and she was very excited to be there. She just wagged her tail so hard, it was hitting her in the face. :-) She wanted to be friends with everyone. This is one nice little girl.

We went into the examining room, and got her all checked out. Her mouth smells pretty bad-- and there was a very bad tooth in there. It was so loose, that when the vet pulled a little, it came right out. No wonder her mouth smelled-- it's already better! She's now on antibiotics and will have a dental next week to clean the rest of her teeth.

Then, we came home. She got to meet the rest of the gang here.

BB/Bianca thought she was wonderful! She wanted to be friends right away.

And Coco didn't mind a bit-- she was not a bit aggressive with any of the dogs. And at the vet, there was a kitten, and she was very interested, so I think she'll be okay with cats, too.

BB is really trying to get close-- I think she has a secret to share.

They all ran up to the deck to go inside. Coco hasn't had any accidents, so I think she'll do fine with going outside. BB is wondering what she's doing. She's just scratching. She had a lot of fleas, but they aren't there now!

And she is so glad-- those little critters are pesky! Look at that smile.

Now, she's talking. And BB is telling her it's time to go inside. Max is at the door already. They love to be out, but they love to be inside, too.

Okay, I'm ready! Let's go! BB is one of our foster dogs, too. Isn't she beautiful. She was a puppy mill raid rescue-- she's not used to being touched, but she's doing better. She needs someone who will give her time and love and a quiet voice. She's only a year old, so she has a whole lifetime of happiness in front of her.

Boo Boo and Rommi/Campbell

I just wanted to let you all know that Campbell is back in rescue. His sisters (seen in an earlier blog) refused to accept him into their home and we want all the Pekes to be happy. So, he is available again and is such a sweet boy!

BOO BOO and ROMMI

Here are two Peke boys who need a new home. They are with their owner, not our rescue group, but I'm trying to help her find them a new home. Boo Boo and Rommi are both 7-8 and did fine until their human brother began to get around. They didn't like him to hug them hard or get in their faces. So, their mom is trying to find them a new place to live and be safe.

This is Rommi. He gets very nervous around children, but is very sweet. He's not very active, so he would be great in a laid back home. He loves attention and has the cutest underbite. He isn't crazy about long walks, just a short, meandering walk is fine with him. He recognizes a good-night song we made up for him by the second note and goes bouncing off to his bedroom. He plays keep away by doing more bouncing than running and panting--always wearing his big smile. Rommi knows how to spell "o-u-t", "w-a-l-k" and "t-r-e-a-t."

Boo Boo is good with older kids, but not small children. He is very affections, loves to walk. He is a beautiful red color. He is about twenty pounds, so not a small Peke! (One of mine is big, too, just more to love.) He loves to snuggle and play. He rolls on his back and twists while making happy grumbly sounds when he wants to be petted. He is so smart, and recognizes all the spellings and the tune that Rommi does. The only difference is that when he hears the goodnight song he runs out of his room to try to stay up later. He has gone through two AKC training courses and has his Good Citizen title. He can sit, stay, speak, and answer the question "Who do you love?" with "Yoooouuuuu!" Boo Boo will bark at dogs on TV and loves to snuggle with his mom.

Both Pekes eat Iams small bites. They like people, but like most Pekes, they would prefer you to not be right in their face. If you would like to find out more about these two, please email me at haveninhim@aol.com

Macy

Look at this puppy!! She was in an animal control and one of our adopters saw her and went right over and adopted her!! Tracey is a wonderful pet owner-- she has three Pekes and Macy, the puppy, makes four.
She was so tiny when she got her-- here she is with Shadow. Shadow is only 1 1/2, so he's still a puppy, too. Look hard-- the puppy is in there!

Macy is about 2 1/2 months old now. She had a little ulcer in her eye-- but she's doing great now.

Here she is with Anniebelle. Anniebelle is 14 now-- and she ignores the puppy. I think Macy is trying to imitate Anniebelle-- look how they are sleeping the same.

Macy weighs about 2.2 pounds-- so tiny!

Here's Pollyanna-- she was adopted from us. (She came to us in very serious condition with burns all over her back and heartworm positive. You can't see her scars now because her hair is beautiful and covers it all. She is a wonderful girl. She likes to watch Macy from the safety of the couch. :-) She's more interested in wondering what's for supper! She's licking her lips just thinking about it.

Here's Shadow kissing Macy-- I think he's getting used to her. Look at the dog beds. Look at the toys-- it could be my house!!

Macy is very frisky and she LOVES her Peke brother and sisters. Playing is hard work, so she's taking time out for a nap.

Ginger at work

First, I want to give you a "heads up" on a sweet little girl I'm getting today. Her name is CoCo and she was turned into the shelter by her owner. The animal control officer contacted me. She said she took CoCo home with her to make sure she went to rescue, and not to someone who couldn't take care of her. She said she appears to be housetrained and is very sweet. She's about 8 years old, but acts young. We're going to get all her medical done and a dental and then she'll be available to go to a new home. Are you interested? Here's Ginger:

Ginger, formerly Princess Parris, is now living and working in North Carolina. Her mom is a real estate person and so Ginger is hard at work helping her. Just look at the picture below!

Ginger has great people skills=== One person came and brought her a toy-- a BoBo. It is soft and squeaks and she loved it. She put it in her mouth and shook it. Just one of the perks of being a working Peke girl.

Her mom told me that she hid somewhere in the house after they had all gone to bed. About 2 a.m., her mom looked over at her little pallet, and she was gone! There is nothing unsafe in the house, but she couldn't locate her. She called to her, but no response. The only place she did not look was way under the bed. Sure enough, in just a few minutes, she decided to come out from under the bed and just looked at her mom as if to say, "What is the matter? I was sleeping!"

Ginger goes to work every day and is such a great addition to the office!

In our rescue group, we are being asked to help more than we have foster homes for. I received several emails pleading for me to help this older Peke. He was in a kill shelter and had very limited time. He was left in his home after his owners moved away-- I don't understand how people can do that. I will never understand it.
We named him Charlie. One of our volunteers went to get him. I knew we couldn't take an older Peke-- their chances of adoption are slim-- we are such a small group with only 5-6 foster homes. But, I could NOT get this little guy out of my mind. So, I called my friend. And she got him.

She had him groomed and he had to be shaved down because of all the matting. He probably will have his left eye removed when he is neutered. It's been damaged and can't be helped. He sees shadows with the other eye. But, sweet-- oh, yes, he is sweet. He's probably 8-10 years old. His current foster mom says she took him to work with her. Then, she took him to a pet store and bought him a toy-- and he LOVED it. He squeaked it and then quietly barked at her in happiness. He is a mellow sweet boy. He spent the day with another friend of rescue because his foster mom asked her to "puppy sit" him for the day. And she loved him, too.

This little one just needs a home where he can be loved, live out his life and be safe. If you think you can help him, please let me know. If you can contribute to his eye surgery and vet costs, please email me.
