CHARLIE, MARCO POLO AND ZSA ZSA

Marco Polo was adopted in December, 2009. He came to us from a shelter in the western part of Virginia. He had a collar embedded in his neck and had to have surgery. He wasn't even a year old. But, look at him now! He's a beautiful Peke-- and he is very loving. His family family says he just radiates sunshine and has brought so much joy into their lives.
He joined his brother Charlie, who is eleven now. Charlie and Marco are great friends.
They have now been joined by Zsa Zsa. She was in a shelter in NC I think. She loves her daddy!!!
She could sit on his lap all day. When he went to an appointment, she just watched the door for him to come home. Who is happier? It's hard to tell whether it's Zsa Zsa or her new daddy.
She has her little bows on here. When she wakes up in the morning, she runs to her mom's room to give her lots of kisses. (Zsa Zsa has two moms, her daddy's wife and her daddy's daughter-- it's kind of confusing to explain, but it just means there is a lot of love around.)
Marco Polo has a crush on Zsa Zsa!! He will snooze beside her in the sunshine and dote on her. Charlie thinks he now has a girlfriend to protect. All is well and they are all so happy to have Charlie, Marco Polo and Zsa Zsa "Zah" in their lives.

HELPING ANIMALS IN JAPAN

Click here: Animal Rescue - Pet Shop - Japan Earthquake - Help Animals Now This is the animal rescue site-- it says 100% of donations goes to helping the animals.

STARLIGHT AND BACK INJURIES

Starlight has been in her playpen for almost 2 weeks for her back injury. That's what the specialist said to do. Does that mean she's about to get out? Not necessarily. She injuried her back somehow (who knows!?) and couldn't use her back legs. Now, she is wobbling around a bit when I take her outside-- her only times of freedom.
She is really bored with this playpen stuff. She hides out under the pillow....
She turns the pillow over to see what is underneath.
She pouts.
And plasters her little face against the bars. She thinks she's in prison and she's beginning to be vocal about it. LET ME OUT!
The playpen is in my study, so if I'm in the kitchen, she can use the portable playpen-- also known as a laundry basket. It means she can keep me company when I'm in the kitchen, or the family room and she can still see what is going on. It's not the best, but better than being alone.
Pretty soon, we hope Starlight will be able to play with Beach Bit again, run around the house. Stairs are off limits indefinitely. I carry her in and out since we have five steps off the deck leading to the yard.

I'm going to do more research on back injuries. Pekes have long backs-- some as long as a Dachshund. Hard to believe!

Here is a link for more information on back injuries. If your dog has a back injury in the future, surgery is not always required. But, rest will be required whether they have surgery or not. They won't understand, and they won't thank you, but we will know we're doing the best we can for them. Click here: Dodgerslist Home Page

DOGS AND AGING

Jeanne sent me this. You can click on the chart and it should enlarge it.

Zeke and Danny

Zeke came out of a shelter near me-- his owner went into a nursing home. Let me tell you this is one sweet boy!!
He bounces when his foster mom gets home, bounces when he is going on a walk, and loves life. He has a cataract in his only eye, but it is not severe enough to have surgery. He may need that in the future.
Danny is a young one-- maybe a year old. He is a little afraid of men, but lets his foster mom do anything to him.
He is getting used to the other dogs in his foster home. He was terrified at first! WHAT IS THAT OTHER THING WITH FOUR LEGS!!?
Danny has an adoption pending, but Zeke needs a home. I would adopt him if I didn't have four already!! :-)

FUN DAY--- GET READY!!

Are you ready for Fun Day!!! We have a Pekingese picnic every year in N.Va. We have so many people and Pekingese and we have a LOT of fun!!!
Pekingese who were our foster dogs-- and those that weren't are welcome to attend. (And their doggy friends, too!)
The Pekes can greet each other, make new friends, and see old friends.
Owners bring xpens to "corral" their Pekingese-- some bring umbrellas in case they can't find a shady spot. There are usually areas to stay in the shade, including a pavillion with lots of tables and benches. Some of the Pekes and owners park themselves there.
ARE YOU COMING THIS YEAR??! I hope so!
Joshie will surely be there. Okay, I'm sorry to say this to all of my former fosters. I love you all!! But, Joshie and my Scooterbug were great friends and Joshie was one of my favorites. I know, I know--you're not supposed to have favorites, but Joshie IS ONE. I love you, Joshie!!

JAPAN--

Jon, one of our club members, just sent me this link:
Click here: Japan: Imminent danger There are some animal rescue links if you want to donate. Here's another link/article that came to me: Click here: When Disaster Strikes, Noah's Wish Saves Animals - Paw Nation
I saw this on craigslist and couldn't resist posting it. In rescue, we get many stories about why people "have to" give up their dogs. Some are definitely legitimate, but so many are not. Here's what the posting said:
"For all those people who “can't keep their dog” because they are getting a divorce, pregnant, moving to a place that "doesn't allow pets", and are going to "have" to take their pet to a pound because the kids no longer play with it, no time for it, etc.... This woman has been through a 9.0 earthquake, a killer tsunami, a nuclear power plant that is emitting radiation, has nowhere to live, is hungry and cold... and she STILL HAS HER DOG!!! "
If any of you find legitimate sites for helping the people or animals in Japan, please send them to me. Many sites have come up that are scams, and we'd like to legitimate ones for those who would like to donate.
