KIRA

Here's Kira-- she was a breeder's dog. Her "owner" has turned in more than a few to the shelter or rescue groups when they are no longer of any use to her. Sad, but it happens.
Kira was adopted quickly and loves her new mom and dad. She even got a pink bed! Now, that is one nice pink bed. Her mom washed it one day and it wasn't dry when it was time for bed. Her mom put a pillow out for her and she looked at her as if to say, "hey this is not my bed" and she didn't get all comfy like she normally does. When her bed was ready she got in it, stretched out on her back, and snored most of the night.
Kira is obviously very comfortable there. I don't think it could be more comfortable.
Kira, you are so sweet. We are so glad we could help you find such a loving home.

FAREWELL TO MUGS AND BALI

Mugs was one of our foster dogs in 2005. His foster mom, Toni, fell in love and adopted him. He lived happily for almost six years with her.
He was a beautiful parti-color Pekingese who loved his balls and his mom. Farewell, sweet Mugs-- you will be so missed.
We also had to say good-bye to Bali. Bali and his Peke brother, Lazslo, came into rescue and we hoped they would have many happy years in a new home. The day after we got them, Bali began to hemorhage and an exam showed an inoperable mass. No surgery could save him. We won't let a dog suffer if we cannot save him, so someone held him while he was released from his pain.
Farewell, sweet Bali. We didn't know you long, but you were loved already.

ALFIE, THE IRISH PEKE

This is Alfie, a Pekingese who lives in Ireland.
His owner wrote us asking why there were so many Pekingese that needed help. He didn't realize how many puppy mills this country has. He was amazed that people could abandon these precious dogs.
Alfie, that looks like a piece of furniture you're eating. It is a familiar puppy, teething thing. I have nice tables that have the marks of puppies teething on them, too.
That's better-- chew on your toy.
Alfie is a beautiful Peke! His owner said he is a lovely, happy, healthy and very good natured little dog. He loves playing with all his toys in succession-- he has four different balls, plus about ten other types of toys.
If he can sit at his owner feet and just veg, he is happiest. Alfie will be one year old on April 8. That's easy to remember for me, because it was my mom's birthday-- so an early HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALFIE!! It's good to know an Irish Peke! (I know Kenzo and Moi Moi would love to meet you-- they're in Australia!)

TOP DOG POISONS

Top 10 Dog Poisons This is important information on things that are dangerous for your pets. Number 1: Medications for People (This is my Scooterbug and this is exactly what he thinks about the top ten poisons-- he wants all his animal friends protected against these poisons.)
Number 2: Flea and Tick Products (This is wonderful little Mei Li-- one of our newer fosters.)
Number 3: People Food (This is Colby, one of the Bristol 18-- he was one of the two puppies. I did a blog on him last week.)
Number 4: Rat and Mouse Poison (This is Brandy, from the Bristol 18 rescue. She's still available! She's a beautiful girl.)
Number 5: Pet Medications (Kenzo, from Australia, would not want anything to happen to his animal friends.)
Number 6: Household Plants (And this is Kenzo's friend, Moi Moi. She had to have her picture included also!) Number 7: Chemical Hazards (This is Cocoa, the Cocker Spaniel that we helped when we took in his Pekingese brother, Maximus. We found her a home right away-- we do occasionally venture out of the Peke breed if they are best friends of a Peke.)

Number 8: Household Cleaners (I had to include this picture-- it is just a great picture-- no Peke, but too funny.)
Number 9: Heavy Metals (paint, etc.) (We wouldn't want anything to hurt these cute puppies.)
Number 10: Fertilizer (This is Puccina, a little Peke we were trying to help-- but looks like a friend took her in.)

Make sure you read the article for all the information and ways to prevent poisoning to your pets-- it's worth the time to read.

LEO aka CHOKU

Leo was one of our foster dogs-- a special need's Peke. He was born with an eye condition that caused hm to lose one eye and be blind int he other. He was only a year old when we had him in rescue-- and he was so sweet!!
Being blind never affected his cheerful and loving spirit. He was adopted and now has two buddies.
Leo is now Choku-- his name means Truth Body Illuminating the Darkness of Ignorance. WOW, that's a big name meaning for a little dog. :-) Bodhicitta (black and white one), and Jangchub (the black one) are his friends now. Aren't they cute!
Bodhicitta and Choku (Leo) are best friends. Bodhicitta is also blind (from birth) and you can tell that Choku really loves her-- look at him resting his head on her back.
I think Choku wanted to be in the middle of the group here! You can tell he loves his canine companions.
I think he loved the snow, too! Eventually, spring will come to New England and the rest of us. We love you, Choku!!

DARBY-- PLAYPEN REST

I'm shared how Starlight has had to be in her playpen because she hurt her back. We're a month into her healing and she is doing a lot better. She has "out of the playpen" time a lot now. She's thrilled because she can see Beach Bit more than just through the bars of the playpen-- aka Jail haha.
Amee's "Drill Bit" loves Darby, her "Starlight." Darby can be her own "self" at times, if you know what I mean. But, she loves her baby, just like Starlight does. Were these two dogs twins at some point. :-)
Darby hurt her back, so she has to spend time in her playpen, also known as her crate. She looks very comfortable, and she's on medicine, just like Starlight.
She got out of the crate for a little bit and was able to sit at the front door with her Drill Bit. Don't they look like a happy pair!
**Here's Darby's email to me: (I love Peke emails!!)
I hope Starlight is feeling better – Let her know that I won’t be playing with my drill bit any time soon as I have hurt my back and I am on bed rest as mom calls it and in a playpen – Dr. Teague took good care of me today but I don’t feel so hot – so no playing, no up and down steps – lot of rest but, it sure is boring in here – Love Darby

TIPPY -- APRIL FOOL'S TO ME

Well, slap my wrist, and call me bad! I took in a new foster dog for our group-- and she isn't a Peke! When you look at the pictures, tell me what you think she is.
I received a call that a woman had gone into the hospital, and had died. Her little dog was left without an owner, and was in danger of being sent to the shelter. This little girl used to walk around the block with her owner, and Tippy held a little stuffed animal in her mouth the whole time. How cute!
I was told she really looked like a Peke, so sight unseen, I said "bring her over." I'm supposed to get pictures first, but this time I didn't do it. She showed up at the door and I thought, "Where's the Peke??" But, I was committed, so in she came. I did not want to see this dog at the shelter.
She is a sweet, sweet girl. She is almost ten, perfect for someone who wants a little one to just love on. She was only in the xpen the first day, then her foster mom came to pick her up. (She did great with my grandson, too.)
Look at that sweet face. She is housetrained, loving, gets along with other dogs. She just needs a place to live her life-- and that could be 5-6 more years-- or more!
She's happy! If you think she would fit in your home, just send us an email. potomacpekes@gmail.com
