HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOJO

Mojo came into rescue 5 years ago this month.  

He was an owner surrender and he was partially paralyzed.   He received pain meds, a lot of care and therapy and regained the use of his back legs. 

He is a loving and sweet boy.  

He can be cantankerous w the other dogs at times but his mom adores him. 

It’s hard to believe that he is 13 years old.

CINNAMON AND SHARING

Cinnamon is used to her cousins.  

They come to our house or we visit there. 

She would rather be home. 

She doesn’t like change. 

If she has her brothers, she’s better.  

Tuk Tuk is fine, too but he sure is busy.  A big blast of energy.  Toasty is more noisy than busy. 😂 toasty likes to be in her face. 

But when a new foster comes… 

She is like “WHAT?!”

Especially if they are energetic young ones.  😳😳

I tell her they aren’t staying.  She’s not convinced. 😂

WELCOME YOGI

Shelters all around the country (and other countries like Australia where Lady Jicky lives) are overflowing w dogs.  

Yogi was a stray and no one came.   

My friend Susan helps at this shelter so over the years, we have been able to help many dogs from there. 

The shelter asked for help w non Pekes.  We call them “wanna-be Pekes.”   They must have heard that Pekes are treated like royalty.  

Yogi was all cleaned up. He had to be cut really short because his coat was too matted to save.  It will grow back. I imagine he felt so good to get rid of all the hair pulling on his skin.  

Yogi is a Pomeranian and about 4-5 years old we’re guessing.  He is not a fan of other dogs so he would prefer to be the only one getting attention.  He was just neutered and is up to date on everything.  I know he’s not a Peke, but I’m sure he wants to be.  If you are interested in this little one please fill out our application.

FAREWELL CUBBIE

Fourteen years ago this month I received a call to help a puppy. 

When I picked him up, a little girl had cut a lot of his hair.  But his skin was safe.  The mother realized he would not be safe there.  I brought him home. He was 1 1/2 pounds.  He saw himself in the mirror and barked at himself.   Little tough guy. ❤️

Since he was a puppy, I knew Paige and Dani could do a great job fostering him.  Puppies are a lot of work. 

Cubbie grew and Paige and Dani fell in love w him.  He stayed. 

Cubbie grew into a beautiful boy. 

Cubbie went on many camping trips w his dog siblings. 

He lived a great life. 

He was a sweet and loving boy. 

Cubbie began having mobility issues.  He also appeared  to be going into dementia.  In dogs it is called Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome.   But like in people, the brain is aging, confusion sets in.  It can affect physical abilities, eating, personality.  Just like in humans.  

 

Cubbie had 14 wonderful years w his family.  He was a cherished boy.

ADVANTAGES OF BEING A FOSTER MOM

I've been fostering for 21 years.  I won't be able to continue indefinitely because... 

well, I'm getting old.  It happens. 

But, that's not today.   Today, we have a happy bunch of dogs.   Callie is enjoying them all.   

The advantage of being a foster mom-- you're never bored!  Life is always changing, and you sure learn to be flexible.

You learn how to share.   Some might not like sharing, but foster dogs teach you that its really fun to share.  Like on the couch.  You'll probably get a few kisses while you do it.

You learn to use things that you didn't even know you had.  This is a crib side.  It makes a great dog separation during meals.   Many dogs would like the other dogs to share food with them.   But that's how you end up with fat dogs and skinny dogs.   Somebody is a thief.  LOL

When you foster, you end up with a lot of dog things.  Like xpens.   I have several.  They are great for new ones, or keeping some contained while you do errands.   They also double at painting racks.   Painting boards was made easier with this to hold up the board.  

My grooming table become a sawing area.   Perfect!  Just hope the table doesn't get sawed. 

When you foster, you meet the young and old, the healthy and the sick.  You meet some who only stay awhile, some who are there longer, and some never leave.  Some are too sick or traumatized to be moved again.  Birdie has so much interest and she is going visit one of our board members.  She might not come back!   I have a lot of interest in her and Olivia.  They are great applications-- but we can only choose one for each dog.  

Sometimes, you get surprised!   Like having albino Pekes.   We've had several in rescue.  You all know Toasty. 💗

When you foster dogs, you learn better ways to wash dogs-- your own and your fosters.   I had a large sink put in the kitchen.  I can't lean over a tub.  Somehow the window above the sink is always cleaned after a dog bath.  They like to share.  Birdie had surgery so I couldn't bathe her.   But I have doggy wipes and I used those on her.   She will need a full bath when her incision is healed enough.  

When you foster, you see joy almost daily.   Fosters are so grateful to be safe.  

And sometimes you have fosters who become very best friends.   They won't be adopted together, but they will have new friends I know.  

Some people can't foster-- they want to keep every one of them.  So, they have to stop.   And that's okay.   If you can let them go, you'll have the blessing of loving another Peke (or non Peke).   The dogs give back so much.   That's the biggest advantage of fostering-- all the love.  
 

BARRY NEEDS A HOME

Barry isn't one of our foster dogs, but we still try to help.   

Barry is a 5 year old Peke.  He was adopted with his brother from a shelter after his owner died.  But, Barry would prefer a home where he can get all the attention.   He was in boarding without his brother and he did fine without him.  

His owner asked for help.  He is located near Charleston, WV which is outside our area. We also don't have a place to put a dog who doesn't get along with other dogs since all our foster homes have multiple dogs.  Barry is neutered and up to date on vaccines.   He loves people and is very affectionate.
