THE APPLICATION PROCESS.

We have been getting so few dogs into rescue.   With covid, many are being adopted from shelters instead of coming to us.  (When people return to work, we think some of these dogs will be returned to shelters or to us.)   We have more applicants than dogs.

There are things about this process:

1.  We match the dog to the applicant.   It’s not first come-first serve.   We want the best home for each foster dog we have.   If you want only a female, be aware that we get more males than females.   We don't know why.

2.  We normally adopt only in Maryland and Virginia.  Exceptions are rare and done only for previous adopters.

3.  We require home visits.  If you aren’t comfortable with that, please do not apply.

4.  We DO call your vet for a reference.  It’s your job to contact your vet to let them know we will be calling.  Please make sure you have given us the correct number.   Many times, we are having to find the number ourselves.

5.  We require that previous pets were on heartworm preventative.   We have treated too many heartworm positive dogs and do not waive this requirement.

6.  If you want to crate your dog while you are at work, do not apply.

7.  We do not allow the use of doggy doors because of the danger of eagles or hawks getting a small Pekingese.  We do not allow the use of tethers.   We do not allow the use of underground/invisible fences.  It may keep your dog in, but it doesn't keep predators out.

8.  If your application has unanswered questions, we will not process it.   If there is more than one adult in the home, all must be listed.  Do not put N/A.

9.  We are volunteers.   We use our times, money, and home to nurture these dogs.   We have come up w standards for the good of each precious little one we foster.

People have said it's too hard to adopt a rescue.  They say we ask too many question.  When we get a dog and nurse them back to health, and love them as our own, we ARE careful who we will entrust them to.   I've done rescue for 18 years, and our rules are very reasonable.  We just want the best.
